Antique Fishing Lure at Pflueger Lures
![]() |
Pflueger’s designs range from a variety of living forms such as artificial but live-looking underwater minnows, to pardee frogs, fancy blades with fish scale designs, ducks, and Pflueger’s version of the salt water Catalina minnow. What made his lures unique was the way he designed them using a special mixture of paint which made the lures luminous thus emitting light even underwater during cloudy days. The paint used is said to be made of self-luminous phosphoric compounds which retains the luminous effect of the paint even after it has been kept out of the light for hours after being exposed.
Earnest Pflueger bought the rights to his Pflueger Lures and patented them back in 1883 and has remained an inspiration to fishing lure manufacturers and the industry itself. Similar works patterned after Plueger’s designs are still being sold to hobbyists and tackle collectors worldwide. There are websites online that are based in Ohio where Plueger Lures was first established, and they are selling these Plueger lures at collector’s item prices.
