Take Care of The Bait

Live baits have always been used by professional anglers in catching a variety of fish. They are known to effectively capture a good variety of game and food fish. Proper care of live bait is crucial in having a successful fishing adventure. Here are some ways to help keep them kicking and wriggling at the tackle end.
Baits can be mullets, minnows, shiners, shrimps or crabs that require oxygen and water to stay alive. Most fishermen nowadays invest in bigger boats with live wells installed. This equipments help to provide water circulation and keep the water oxygenated by automatic aeration. This is the same function performed by the portable bait tanks found in older boats.
There are live bait species that cannot tolerate warm weather and require more attention. The wild shiners from Florida prefer cooler air and water insulated live wells. Crushed ice can also be beneficial in keeping the temperature low, but extreme care should be practiced in applying them. A quick change in temperature can cause shock and death to these live baits.
The shape and design of these bait tanks and live wells should also be inspected. An oval or round shaped contraption is recommended. Some live bait specie such as the menhaden love sticking their nose in the corners. Having the sharp corner can result to the ‘red nose’ symptom that can shorten the lives of these fish. Some chemicals are also needed to be mixed in live well water to help keep the fish baits calm.
Coming up with a large and numerous catch of fish can be made possible using live baits. Keeping these baits alive is another matter.
